The CVA was contacted by the Helsinki Business College to see if they would conduct a workshop giving an overview of the DACUM Model, as this institution is moving to a competency based model of education. In addition to the college personnel, a number of external people were invited to attend. These included administrators from other colleges as well as people from the Ministry of Education. The Helsinki Business College is one of the major business education institutions in Helsinki and in Finland. The private college was founded in 1881 and it is owned by the Helsinki Chamber of Commerce.
The interest in the DACUM Model was the result of a workshop attended in 2002 in Winnipeg by Ms Helena Allahwerdi, director of International Affairs at the Helsinki Business College (HBC). Sensing that this model could enable the HBC to better prepare its students to meet the competency requirements and standards of the business and industry sector in Finland and internationally, Ms Allahwerdi convinced her colleague, Ms Hely Westerholm, director of Studies, of going to Canada to attend the CVA DACUM Training Workshops and to visit a number of colleges utilizing DACUM or other competency-based approaches derived from the DACUM model (for an account of Ms Westerholm's journey in Canada, see the article that she graciously wrote for the benefit of our readers in this issue of The Journal)
Upon her return to Finland, Ms Westerholm strongly recommended that the CVA be formally invited to provide an overview of the DACUM model as well as to facilitate an analysis, using the DACUM methodology, to identify the competency profile required of instructors at the HBC.
Due to the interest, the DACUM model overview workshop was divided into two groups of 20 which allowed for more interaction. Following this first presentation, the participants were again divided into two groups:
We made it known to the HBC authorities that the CVA is ready to contribute the expertise and experience of its membership to make this wish come true.
